Samsung BodyTom is a full-body portable intraoperative CT scanner that is operational in our neurosurgical workflow. It brings CT imaging into the operating room so the team can verify tumour resection extent and spinal hardware position before closure. For patients, the main benefit is real-time confirmation that planned goals—accurate screw placement or appropriate tumour removal—have been checked while surgery is still under way, supporting informed decisions before the wound is closed. Patients do not experience symptoms from the scanner itself. BodyTom is considered when the clinical situation needs immediate OR confirmation—for example complex spinal instrumentation, deep or critically located tumours, revision operations, or anatomy that may shift during surgery. Your underlying condition (tumour requiring maximal safe resection, or spine needing precise screws) determines whether real-time CT verification is likely to be used. Ask your surgeon during planning whether your case is one in which intraoperative CT is typically employed.

Diagnosis

BodyTom is not an outpatient diagnostic scanner. It is used during surgery after positioning and draping. The portable unit acquires focused or full-body CT images without transferring the patient to a separate radiology suite. Images are reviewed at once to assess residual tumour, screw trajectories, alignment, or unexpected collections, guiding immediate further resection, screw adjustment, or confirmation that goals are met before closure.

In the operative workflow, scanning is integrated after critical steps such as screw insertion or tumour debulking. The team pauses briefly, reviews images, and continues or adjusts as needed. Workflow benefits include verification of accuracy before closure, support for fewer unexpected returns for malposition when images show a problem in time, and clear documentation of the intraoperative result. BodyTom complements surgical skill, navigation, and other adjuncts; it does not replace them. The system is operational for appropriate cases in this service.

Samsung BodyTom is a full-body portable intraoperative CT platform and is OPERATIONAL in the described setting. It enables real-time verification of tumour resection and hardware (screw) accuracy before closure—the core patient benefit. It may be combined with the operating microscope, navigation, endoscopy, or C-arm according to the case. Naming other platforms (Zeiss, ARC, IONM) applies only when those tools are part of the same operation; IONM remains pending where not yet in routine use. BodyTom specifically adds cross-sectional CT confirmation inside the OR.

BodyTom does not change how anaesthesia or the incision feels. Scanning adds a short interval during surgery while images are obtained and reviewed. Afterwards, recovery follows the pathway of the underlying cranial or spinal procedure. The team can explain in general terms whether intraoperative CT was used and what it confirmed.
