Laminectomy is a spine operation in which the lamina—a small bony plate at the back of a vertebra—is removed to widen the spinal canal. Extra space eases pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots from stenosis, thickened ligament, or bone overgrowth. Seek timely neurosurgical review for leg heaviness or pain that worsens with walking and eases with sitting (neurogenic claudication), progressive numbness or tingling, leg weakness, unsteady gait, or new bladder or bowel control changes. Isolated backache is less specific; nerve-type symptoms that limit daily life deserve assessment rather than prolonged self-medication.

Care begins with history and a focused neurological exam of strength, sensation, reflexes, and walking. MRI is the main study to show canal narrowing and nerve compression; CT or plain X-rays add bone detail when needed. Findings are always matched to your symptoms before recommending laminectomy.

Treatment options

Many patients improve with pain control, activity pacing, physiotherapy, and sometimes image-guided injections. When stenosis remains disabling and imaging fits the clinical picture, laminectomy decompresses the canal. If alignment or stability is a concern, fusion may be added in the same sitting. Minimally invasive or open approaches are chosen case by case; neither is universally “better.”
